Irish Belleek China

Give Your Décor The Look O’ The Irish With Belleek China!

Belleek China is very beautiful and a pleasure to own. Belleek, home of Ireland’s oldest pottery, lies on the banks of the River Erne where this loved Parian china has been produced for over 150 years! It is a truly original piece of Irish artisanship, made using materials and techniques perfected through each generation. Amazingly, no two pieces are ever the same.

Founded in 1857, the stellar reputation of Belleek China has been primarily built on the founder, John Caldwell Bloomfield. At the time, he declared that any piece with even the slightest flaw should be destroyed.

The 'Harp and Hound' trademark, present on many Belleek items truly reflects the heritage of Belleek and the history of Ireland. In 1863, the trademark was formalized and can be seen on the Round Tower Centerpiece and the Irish Castle Tower.

Belleek’s earliest pieces were typically high quality pieces for the home as well as some commercial pieces. Earliest examples of Belleek are typically pestles, mortars, hospital pans, telegraph insulators, washstands, floor tiles, and tableware. It was a goal of the founder to make the most of the obtainable mineral wealth, however, he also wanted to utilize their talented craftsmen and continue to hone the advancements in pottery that were being witnessed at the time.

It was at the 1872 Dublin Exposition where Belleek porcelain was first displayed. As word got around about this beautiful china, exports to Canada, United States and Australia flourished during the latter part of the century.

During World War I, sales of Belleek China floundered due to severe restrictions on exports, which limited the market. World War II wasn’t much easier for the company and was fraught with many challenges. Yet, the skill team of managers was able to keep Belleek Pottery afloat during the tumultuous war years.

In 1952, they took production to a new level and installed their first kiln powered by electricity. This kiln was a major adjustment for the company, because electricity was now the sole means of firing all Belleek items.

The company changed hands two times during the 80s, and in 1990, it changed hands again, this time to an investment group. The management team revitalized the Belleek organization and in the last few years has embarked upon the strategic purchase of other companies.

In the 21st century, you’ll find that collectors and people looking to add beautiful accents to their home seek Belleek China. Beellek China also makes the perfect wedding gift. Be sure to tell the happy couple about the old Irish saying, “If a newly married couple receives a gift of Belleek, their marriage will be blessed with lasting happiness”.
